As a future educator, I do believe that technology plays an important role in the world around us. I also believe that it is a useful tool when it comes to speech. Today there are thousands of speech devices, more commonly known as AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) device, out there such as a DynaVox or Tobii. Not only are there actual speech devices but there are also many people making use of societies current technology, such as an iPad or tablet to promote speech.
I have personally seen the wonders that these pieces of technology can do to enhance a child's speech and therefore increasing others understanding. With the use of technology, we are not taking away the child's voice, only enhancing it. Through my experience, I have noticed that children that have the ability to speak will do so first and then, if they are in need of assistance, they will then turn to their device. Technology in the speech world does not hinder a child's speech but instead promotes it.
Technology does not have to be advanced in order to help a child that has a speech or language disorder. Many parents or caretakers can provide a child with a voice if they simply have a computer with an internet connection, a printer, and a laminator. Many schools and therapy clinics use tools such as a GoTalk or the PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) system in order to allow children with these disorders to have access to communicate their wants and needs.

With that being said, I do not believe technology should just be used by those students that struggle. Technology should be used in the classroom as well as the therapy room. Children like games. When a child is playing a game, they are learning without actually being aware of it. This is the best tool that we have as educators to enhance learning and understanding of topics.
There are many websites in which teachers are able to log on to and create games that will promote the learning that they specifically want for their class. Not only are there websites in which teachers can create but there are ones that have material already created, such as YouTube. These websites can promote learning if used wisely.
Technology is a powerful tool and I believe that it takes time and training to improve skills to enhance learning.
